Signing Ceremony Between U.S. Government and The Fundación Colombia Para la Educación y la Oportunidad
On January 14, 2008 the Government of the United States of America and the Fundación Colombia Para la Educación y la Oportunidad signed a letter of intent to cooperate in a mutual effort to enhance the U.S. Embassy Colombia Martin Luther King Fellows Program (MLK).
The Fundación Colombia Para la Educación y la Oportunidad, with the support of the Coca Cola Foundation, has agreed to commit US$50,000 to the MLK Fellows Program in an effort to strengthen the Fellow’s English language and leadership skills. The funds will support the MLK Fellows for a defined period of time in English language and leadership training at the university level.
Created in 2006, MLK Fellows receive USG funding for English-language scholarships, educational advising and leadership training. The goal of the MLK Fellows Program is to prepare high-potential Afro-Colombian university undergraduates for US post-graduate educational opportunities and to acquaint them with the issues relevant to bi-national relations. There are currently 87 fellows based in Cali, Bogota, Quibdó and Medellin.
