U.S. Marines Restore School in Santa Marta
August 27, 2009
Thanks to the humanitarian work of a group of volunteer U.S. sailors, the Nicolas Buenaventura School in Santa Marta was remodeled on August 25. This educational establishment provides learning services to 600 boys and girls. The remodel and paint jobs were a joint effort of both the U.S. Navy and the Colombian Coastguard. In addition to having new and better educational facilities, students received a humanitarian donation of hygiene products and toiletries, first aid supplies and toys.
The U.S. Marines arrived in Santa Marta on board the USS DOYLE, a frigate that belongs to the Fourth Fleet of the Alliance for the Americas. It is currently in the midst of a mission of cooperation and collaboration with allied nations in Latin America and the Caribbean. This mission includes mutual training exercises and the development of humanitarian and civic projects that benefit local communities.
