U.S. Supports School in Barbacoas, Nariño

The United States donated over $240,000 to reconstruct school

July 24, 2009

The U.S. Government, through its Agency for International Development (USAID), provided $240,000 worth of resources to reconstruct and improve the “Escuela La Inmaculada” (The Immaculate School) located in Barbacoas, Department of Nariño. Thanks to this aid it was possible to build eight classrooms and two bathrooms that will benefit around 1,400 young people. Among those present at the July 23 inauguration were Colombian First Lady Lina Moreno de Uribe and USAID Colombia acting director Lawrence Hardy.

The improvements made to the school are part of the Colombian Presidency’s Plan Padrino Program that seeks to reach the education quality and coverage goals set by the National Government through infrastructure improvements, equipment donations, and training activities that benefit displaced populations.

Under Plan Padrino, this school applies the strategy promoted by the Colombian First Lady’s Office Open Doors Program which promotes non-violence and prevents domestic violence, sexual abuse and sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) through learning activities, cultural and sports activities.

This project was made possible thanks to the joint effort of the American Government, the Barbacoas Mayor’s Office and Nariño Department Governor’s Office. To this date USAID has sponsored 10 Plan Padrino projects, benefiting 11,400 people, including young people, teachers and parents.
